Environment and Land Tribunals Ontario (ELTO) Local Planning Appeal Tribunal Webinar: A Primer

Environment and Land Tribunals Ontario (ELTO) Local Planning Appeal Tribunal Webinar: A Primer

by KrystinRennie

The Building Better Communities and Conserving Watersheds Act, 2017 (Bill 139), makes a number of changes to the process of seeking and appealing land use planning approvals throughout Ontario. The Act received Royal Assent on December 12, 2017, and will come into effect on April 3, 2018.

As a result of Bill 139, the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) is preparing to become the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal (LPAT) upon proclamation.

Environment and Land Tribunals Ontario (ELTO) is working to develop new approaches to managing Planning Act appeals that are impacted by Bill 139, and are working to streamline case management and hearing room processes to align with the legislated timelines for hearing appeals.

In preparation for this transition, ELTO is preparing draft Rules of Practice and Procedure for LPAT, which has been posted on the ELTO website for your comments and feedback.

ELTO would like to invite members to join them for a webinar on these changes.

There will be three sessions (please note that the same presentations will be made during each session):

  • Webinar 1: Wednesday, March 21, 2018 (2:00pm – 5:00pm)
  • Webinar 2: Wednesday, March 21, 2018 (6:30pm – 9:30pm)
  • Webinar 3: Tuesday, March 27, 2018 (9:30am – 12:30pm)

Topics will include:

  • Key Elements of LPAT’s Function in the Ontario Planning Process
  • Rules Changes: LPAT and Local Planning Appeal Tribunal Act
  • Filing an LPAT appeal – what’s the same and what’s new?

The presentations will be available for download on the ELTO website before the webinars take place. A video of the webinar will also be posted on their website at a later date for those unable to join the livestream.

There is no fee for this webinar; however, you must sign up ahead of time to join in. To sign up for the webinar and for full details, please visit their Eventbrite page.

If you have any questions on the webinar, please feel free to contact the ELTO Citizen Liaison Office by email at or by phone at 416-326-6792 / 1-866-448-2248.
